Traditional concrete batch plants rely on a weigh hopper to measure aggregates. Each material is weighed separately, one at a time, before being discharged into the charging conveyor or mixer. It’s a proven process that has served the ready mixed concrete industry well for decades.
Aggregate weigh belts take a fundamentally different approach.
Instead of weighing material after it has been discharged into a hopper, each aggregate is weighed continuously as it travels across its own precision weigh bridge. The weigh bridge is a short section of conveyor supported by highly accurate load cells that continuously measure the weight of material moving across the belt. Combined with the belt’s travel speed, the control system calculates the material’s mass flow in real time.
Every aggregate is measured while it is already moving.
This continuous weighing process offers significant advantages over traditional weigh hoppers.
First, it creates the potential to weigh multiple aggregates simultaneously. Rather than measuring one aggregate, stopping, and then measuring the next, each aggregate can be independently metered on its own weigh belt. The result is shorter batch cycles, higher production capacity, and more concrete shipped throughout the day.
Second, each weigh belt is driven by its own Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). Contrary to a common misconception, weigh belts are not power-hungry devices that increase operating costs. In fact, the VFDs improve energy efficiency by using only the amount of power the motor requires at any given moment — no more and no less.
The result is exceptional control of every aggregate entering the batch.
